222. for the love of

基本表現と解説

• For the love of Heaven, spare him! 「後生ですから助けてあげてください」

for the love of は in the name of 「……に代わり」とか for the sake of 「……のために」とか by 「……にかけて」の意味となる。例文の Heaven のほかにもいろいろな文句が用いられるが、たいていは全体として「なにとぞ」、「ぜひ」、「後生ですから」などと訳す。

註　by the mother who bore you も for the love of Heaven も by your hope of salvation もすべて「なにとぞ」の意。

註　直訳するなら「家にいるいとしい子供たちへの愛のため」だが、「お願いですから」と訳して問題はない。
