233. 換喩

基本表現と解説

• All Paris turned out to see the spectacle. 「パリじゅうの人がそれを見に出てきた」
• The whole village turned out to see the spectacle. 「村人こぞってそれを見に出てきた」
• The whole neighborhood turned out to see the spectacle. 「布巾の人がみなそれを見に出てきた」

上例の Paris, village, neighborhood 等は人のいる場所をもってそこにいる人々をあらわすもので、修辞学上 metonymy （換喩）に属するもの。
