範例
A good king is, as it were, the father of his people.
明君は宛ら民の父なり。

解説
As it were.  =As if it were actually so.
宛ら。　　　 =事實然るが如く。

Adverbial Clause にして were は Subjunctive Past の假定を示し、全體の意は
(a) If one might so put it.
(b) If one might use the expression.
(c) If one might be allowed to say so.
爾か云ひ得可くば。
(d) So to speak.
(e) In some sort.
　　云はゞ、宛ら、恰も。
(f) Figuratively speaking.
    譬へば。
に同じ。
例えば
 A good king is, as it were            , the father of his people.
=A good king is, so to say             , the father of his people.
=A good king is, so to speak           , the father of his people.
=A good king is, in some sort          , the father of his people.
=A good king is, if one might so put it, the father of his people.
=A good king is, figuratively speaking , the father of his people.
    Etc.        etc.

2.  After travelling for miles through the desert we came to an island, as it were, of palm trees.
