これらは as (true as) I live 「（わたしが生きているのをおなじくらい）確かに」とか as (certainly as) you sit there「（あなたがそこに座っているのとおなじくらい）間違いなく」という意味。自明なことを取り上げて、それくらい確実・本当であるという表現。この手の表現にはいろいろなバリエーションがある。例：
- as I am alive
- as true as the good God is above us
- as sure as God made me
- as there is God in heaven
