38. 譲歩の形 (3) 「形容詞 + as / though + 主語 + 述語」

基本表現と解説

• Young as he was, he was equal to the task. 「若かったけれど、彼はその仕事をこなす力量があった」

形容詞が先頭に来るパターンである。ついでに言うと、young as he was という句は「若かったため」という理由を示す句にもなりうる。

• Young as he was, he was not equal to the task. 「若かったため、その仕事をこなす力がなかった」

譲歩を示すのか理由を示すのかは、文脈から判断するしかない。（§39. 参照）
