170. if a day / if a penny
- Why, the husband was seventy, if a day. 「いや、夫はどうしたって七十は確かです」
- Why, it is worth a thousand, if a penny. 「いや、どうしたって千ポンドの値打ちは確かです」
if a day は年齢について用いられ「少なくとも七十歳」「七十歳は確か」の意味になる。if he was a day old 「一日でも齢を取っているとするなら」の省略形。省略しない形が使われることもある。if a penny も if it is worth a penny 「いやしくも（一ペニーでも）価値があるとするなら」の省略形。
