範例
He advanced as rapidly as his great age would permit.
彼は其老齢の許す限り疾く進んで來た。

解説
As....as....permit (allow, let, etc)
 = にて出來得る限り。
 = が許す限り。

 此形は「或故障(一字読めず)爲め充分……すること能はざれども其故障の許す限り……す」の意。

上掲の例を此意味に書き改むれば次の如し。

    (He could not advance rapidly enough because of his great age, but) he advanced as rapidly as his great age would permit.
  (彼は老體の爲に疾く進めなかつたが)其老體の許す限り疾く進んで來た。

 猶ほ as....as 以下の Clause の Subject が動作を妨ぐるもの、即ち、故障を意味する時は permit, allow, let 等の動詞を用ひ、其動作を行ふもの又は之を助くるものなる時は make, enable 等の動詞を用ふ。

  Impressed の前に being を補ひ見よ。lest...should (=that...might not)...しないやうに。all of a sudden は「突然」にて of a sudden に all の加はりて意味の強くなりたること all at once の at once より強きが如し。

7.  I walked on as briskly as the heat would let me, till I reached the cross-road which led to the village.

8.  The strange boy whistled; and put his arms into his pocket, as far as the big coat-sleeves would let them go.
