解説
本文の如く But that (what) に導かるゝ Noun Clause の前に在る who knows.......? 又は not say, see, know, think 等の Verb の後には anything を補ひて解す可し、即ち
Who knows anything but (that, what)......?
I don't know anything but that (what) ......
= In all probability; probably; perhaps
大方、多分、恐らくは。
猶ほ (b) のbut what は (a) の but that の誤りて生じたるものなり。
また II は I の初の Clause を縮約して主要の語 not を殘したるものなり（Who knows ......? も反語の疑問なるが故に No one knows 又は I do not know と同じ意なり）而て Not but that (what) は前後の關係に依り
Not to say but that......
I do not admit (see, know, think, etc.) but that......
の如く解す可し。
［註］ Not but that (what) は「……と云ふ事なきにあらねど」と云ふ意故、次に示すが如き構文にありては though の意に解するを得。
