Say "Yes" or "No" as the case may be.
(a) 其場合に依て「はい」とか「いゝえ」とか云へ。
(b) 「はい」なら「はい」、「いゝえ」なら「いゝえ」と云へ。
解説
As the case may (might) be

1. "But surely you can think of saying Oh, yes-or Oh, no-as the case may be-that is not a great effort of imagination!"

だつて、お前「左様でございます」とか「いゝえ」とか――其場合でどつちでも――それぐらゐの事は云へようぢや無いか、別に頭の要る事ぢやあ無し。
that is not a great effort of imagination 「大に想像力を働かせねばならぬ事ではない」とは詩歌小説を作るに想像力も必要だが Oh, Yes, Oh, No 位の返辭をするにはその必要はないとの意。
2. "Yes, I am," replied the man, who seemed a little the worse: or better, as the case might be: for drinking; "and not slow about it either."

「はあ、さうですよ」と其奴は答へたが酒を飲んで少々不機嫌、いや、上機嫌――どつちでもいゝが――のやうだつた、「それからまた、直ぐにお立ちになるんだ」。
the worse: or better...for drinking 「酒を飲んで少々機嫌が惡い、いや、機嫌がよいやうに見えた」the worse for drinking (liquor) は「酩酊して」と云ふ熟語、それが「酒を飲んで機嫌が惡い」と云ふ意にも取れるが＊（一字不明）に or better と洒落れたるなり。and ...either は and....too と同じく「それのみならず」「猶は其上に」の意。
3. Not only should you do so in the case of important facts, such as the discovery of shortcomings and defects in your husband or in your wife, as the case may be, but in the smallest details of everyday life.
