7. against

基本表現と解説

• The tall tower stood out boldly against the clear evening sky. 「その高い塔は晴れた夕空を背景にくっきりとあらわれた」

against は「背景」を指示することがある。

例文1

...nothing could be seen from the windows but a vast, white sheet, against which the smoke of the locomotive had a grayish aspect.

……窓の外には茫々たる雪景色だけが広がっていた。その雪を背景にして汽車の煙がねずみ色っぽく見えた。

註　ここでの「窓」は汽車の「車窓」.
