89. collect oneself とそのバリエーション
- He tried to collect himself. 「彼は自分を落ち着けようとした」
この collect は、ばらばらになったものを一つにまとめるという意味。himself の代わりに senses が用いられることもある。
- He tried to collect his senses.
- He tried to collect his scattered senses.
- He tried to collect his wandering senses.
さらに senses の代わりに wits, ideas, feelings, emotions, faculties, thoughts を用いて、 collect one's wits, collect one's thoughts などということもある。すべて「自分を落ち着ける」という意味になる。
