基本表現と解説

• Then we parted for the night. 「それでわれわれは別れた」

for （……のあいだ）を含む句は訳文に工夫の必要がある場合がある。例文は「それでわれわれは別れ、翌日まで会わなかった」ということだが、for the night を言外に含ませるだけでもよい。

A deep sorrow spread over the nation on hearing that Washington was no more. Congress, which was in sesseion, immediately adjourned for the day. The next morning it was resolved that the Speaker's chair be shrouded with black; that the members and officers of the House wear black during the session.
