基本表現と解説
- He obeys the law in the letter, if not in the spirit. 「法の精神には従わないかもしれないが、明文には従っている」
- We carried out our arrangement to the letter. 「われわれはかねての手筈を正確に実行した」
spirit は「精神（内容）」を、letter は「字句（形式）」を示す。ここから転じて to the letter は「文字通りに」「厳密に」「正しく」という意味になる。
