The little fellow’s face was purpling. He raised his heels in the air and drummed frantically at Cronin’s shins. The sudden pain of the kicking heels drew an oath from the killer’s lips. His arm tightened viciously. There was a ghastly crunching snap, and the little man ceased struggling. Cronin expelled his breath in a wheeze and dropped the inert body. It sprawled slackly on the pavement, the head tilted back at a gruesome angle.
The man was dead, all right. Cronin knew a broken neck when he saw one. Stooping, he started to go through the dead man’s pockets. There was an interesting bulge under the vest. But he was interrupted. Hard heels turned the far corner of the block, and he recognized the figure that passed under the street lamp. It was Detective Sergeant Pell.

〔註〕purple には「紫色になる」という動詞の使い方もある。
He raised his heels in the air / and drummed / frantically / at Cronin’s shins.
彼は踵を浮かし / がんがんと蹴飛ばした / 狂ったように / クローニンのすねを
〔註〕raised his heels in the air 「空中に踵を上げた」。drum は太鼓のように叩いたり、蹴ること。at は「～に向かって、めがけて」という意味を示す前置詞。首を締められている男の必死さがこの一語に感じられる。指でテーブルを叩くときなどはべつにテーブルを標的にしているわけではないので drum on the table with one's fingers （テーブルの上で指を鳴らす）のように言う。

〔註〕drew （原形は draw）は「引き出す、引きおこす」。oath は 「誓い」ではなく「呪いの言葉」。

〔註〕viciously は「荒々しく、凶暴に、残忍にも」。
There was a ghastly crunching snap, / and the little man ceased struggling.
ぞっとするようなボキッという音がした / そして小男は抵抗するのをやめた
〔註〕crunch は固いものを食べたときのパリッとかポリッという砕ける音や、落葉の上を歩いたときのサクッサクッという渇いた葉が潰れる音をあらわす。snap はなにかが折れる短い大きな音。cease は「やめる」。動名詞を伴って「～するのをやめる」。e.g., It has ceased raining.

クローニンは息をした / ぜいぜいと / そしてぐったりした身体を下に落とした
〔註〕expell は「吐き出す」。in a wheeze の in はどんな状態で息を吐き出したのかを示す前置詞。e.g., She expelled her breath in a heavy sigh. wheeze は「ぜいぜい息をすること」。inert は「ぐったりした」。body はもちろん「身体」でいいが、ミステリでは body がよく「死体」の意味で使われるので覚えておこう。

〔註〕sprawl は手足を伸ばして寝たり、都市などが不規則に広がること。slackly は「だらしなく」。tilt は「傾ぐ」だが back がついているので「後ろに傾ぐ」。the head 以下は分詞構文。

〔註〕この all right は「確かに、ちゃんと」の意。e.g., "Are you sure it's him?" "It's him all right."
Cronin knew a broken neck / when he saw one.
クローニンには首の骨が折れたことがわかった / ひと目で
〔註〕know X when ... sees one は「見ればＸだとすぐわかる」という意味。one は a broken neck を指すので、直訳するなら「骨折した首を見たら骨折した首だなとわかる」となる。e.g., I know a good painting when I see one. 「よい絵は見ればすぐわかる」。クローニンは経験豊かな殺し屋なのだ。
Stooping, / he started to go through the dead man’s pockets.
屈みながら / 彼は死んだ男のポケットをくまなく調べ出した
〔註〕stoop は「身を屈める」。go through は「くまなく調べる」。

興味深いふくらみがあった / チョッキの下に
〔註〕bulge は「ふくらみ、でっぱり」。なぜそれがクローニンにとって「興味深かった」かは分かるだろう。

硬い踵が / 曲がった / そのブロックの遠くの角を / そして彼は人の姿を認めた / 街灯の下を歩きすぎる
〔註〕「人が角を曲がった」と言うかわりに「（その人が履いている靴の）固い踵が角を曲がった」と言うのをレトリックでは部分提喩と呼ぶ。これを読んだとき頭の中に映画的な一場面が浮かんだだろうか。figure は「人の姿」。
