Two-thirty-one Ellery Street, where he was temporarily stopping under the name of Jonas, was one of a row of bedraggled, crumbling four-story houses not far from the water front. Each one sported an eight-step stoop and a “furnished room” sign.
With his usual caution, he surveyed the street from the doorway of the corner store, and seeing that it was clear, walked swiftly to number two-thirty-one and ascended the stoop. He stepped into the dark hallway and stopped, motionless, his hand arrested in mid-air toward the shoulder clip where his automatic rested.
The powerful beam of a flashlight caught him full in the eyes. A moment later the hall light was switched on, the flashlight off, and his blinking eyes discerned Detective Sergeant Pell, covering him with a very steady thirty-eight.

〔註〕主部は the name of Jonas まで続く。番地の読み方は two-thirty-one でもいいし、two hundred and thirty-one でもよい。stop は「宿泊する」。e.g., He is stopping at the best hotel in Baltimore. a row of は「～の並び」。四階建ての下宿屋が建ち並ぶような道筋になっているわけだ。bedraggled は「みずぼらしい、薄汚い」、crumbling は「ぼろぼろの、崩れかけの」。

〔註〕sported は had あるいは displayed と言っても同じ。stoop は通りから玄関にあがる「登り段、階段」。furnish は「家具をとりつける」。

〔註〕with his usual caution は「彼がいつも見せる用心深さで」の意。e.g., With her usual caution, she checked the lock twice. survey は「注意深く眺め渡す」。seeing that it was clear は when he saw that nobody was around の意。ascend は go up, climb と同じ。

〔註〕his hand arrested 以下は分詞構文。arrested は「動きを止める」。e.g., arrest the flow of water. mid-air は「空中」。toward the shoulder clip は「ホルスターにのばした（手を空中で止め）」の意。rest は「（ある場所に）ある」。e.g., His elbow was resting on the arm of the sofa.

〔註〕caught him full in the eyes は英語特有の言い回しで、まず caught him 「彼に当たった」とおおづかみに示し、つぎに full in the eyes 「まともに目に」と光があたった部分を示す。

〔註〕switch on は「明かりのスイッチを入れる」、switch off は「明かりを消す」。blinking は目をぱちぱちさせること。cover someone with a pistol は「人に銃を向ける」。a very steady thirty-eight は直訳すると「しっかりとぐらつかない三十八口径」だが、この steady は本来は「ペルの手・狙い」に対してつくべき修飾語。それが「三十八口径」につけられているのである。こういうのを転移修飾語（transferred epithet）という。「眠れない夜」というのもこれで、本当は眠れないのは人なのだが、「眠れない」が別の名詞にくっついているのである。covering 以下はもちろん Pell を修飾している。
文法の復習 動詞＋（人）＋前置詞＋（躯の部分）
前置詞は躯の表面に働きかけるケースは on、躯の内部に働きかける（衝撃などが伝わる）ケースは in、躯や衣服の部分をつかむ（grab, take, catch など）、ひっぱる（pull）、持ち上げる（lift）などのケースは by を使う。また躯の部位には the がつき、所有格 （his とか her など）は使われない。

- The opponent hit him on the head.
相手は彼の頭を打った。 - She kissed him on the cheek.
彼女は彼の頰にキスした。 - The dog bit him on the leg.
その犬は彼の足にかみついた。
(2) in を用いる例
- The bullet struck him in the shoulder.
弾丸は彼の肩にあたった。 - The sunlight caught her in the eyes.
日の光が彼女の目にあたった。 - A snowball hit me in the face.
雪玉がわたしの顔にあたった。 - The boxer punched him in the stomach.
そのボクサーは彼のみぞおちを打った。 - He punched me in the nose.
彼はわたしの鼻をなぐった。

- She grabbed him by the arm.
彼女は彼の腕をつかんだ。 - The policeman seized the thief by the collar.
警官は泥棒の襟をつかんだ。 - The mother took the child by the hand.
母親は子供の手をとった。 - He caught her by the wrist.
