The Bellamy Trial by Frances Noyes Hart

フランセス・Ｎ・ハート（1890ー1943）はアメリカの女流作家で、短編小説をいろいろな雑誌に発表していた。1927年に本書「ベラミ裁判」を出し、フランス推理小説大賞を獲得、ヘイクラフト・クイーンの名作リストにも選ばれている。日本には1953年に延原謙の訳で日本出版共同から異色探偵小説集の一冊として紹介されているが……新訳は七十数年出ていないようだ。

法廷ものが好きな人にはたまらない一冊である。ある男が愛人と共謀して妻を殺すという事件が起き、八日間にわたって裁判が開かれるのだが、尋問によって明らかになる事実がセンセーショナルでなかなか面白い。一応事件の真相を推理する手掛かりはすべて提示されるという古典的なフーダニットの形を取っている。二十年代、メディアサーカスのはしりの一つとされるホール・ミルズ裁判が行われたが、それがもとになっている。

Dr. Mabuse, the Gambler by Norbert Jacques

ノルベルト・ジャッック（1880ー1954）はルクセンブルグ生まれの作家で「ドクトル・マブゼ」は彼の代表作。北杜夫の愛読者ならマブゼの名前はご存じだろう。またフリッツ・ラング監督の白黒映画でこの作品をご存じの方もいるだろう。わたしも大好きなパルプ小説の古典である。文学なんかくそくらえ、とにかく楽しみたいんだ、という人にはおすすめの本だ。びっくりしたのはこの翻訳が2004年にハヤカワ・ミステリが出ていること。今世紀に入ってようやく日本に紹介されたのか。

ドクトル・マブゼはパルプ小説にはかならず登場する稀代の悪党というやつである。さっき言ったように楽しんで読めばいい本なのだが、ちょっと考えることが好きな人のためにつけ加えると、パルプ小説の悪党は、その時代時代の悪の観念が形象化されていて、そこに注目するなら文化の変遷を知る上で貴重な手掛かりにもなる。スヴェンガーリとかフー・マンチュー、ジョーカーなどといった例を思い浮かべればそれはすぐにわかるだろう。パルプ小説は案外、政治的にきなくさい要素をはらんでいる。

　「一人が他に」（einer dem andern）も「一人が他を」（einer den andern）も「一人が他の」（einer des andern）も、簡潔な一語にすると、格の不明な einander （英：each other）になってしまいます。前置詞が付く場合、たとえば「一人が他の後に」（einer nach dem andern）、「一人が他のために」（einer für den andern）などは、nacheinander, füreinander などに略されます。

　「学者はお互いに反駁し合う」は：

(1) Die Gelehrten widerlegen sich wechselseitig.
(2) Die Gelehrten widerlegen einer den andern.
(3) Die Gelehrten widerlegen einander.
(4) Ein Gelehrter widerlegt den andern.

です。(1) と (3) とを混じて widerlegen sich einander というのは誤りです。
