The History and Adventures of the Renowned Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra

「ドン・キホーテ」というとアルベール・チボーの議論を思い出す。「ドン・キホーテ」は先行する騎士文学への否定である、つまり小説の形で先行する小説形式を批判した、という議論である。あれ以来「ドン・キホーテ」の活力は小説形式を批判するその活発な力であると考えている。メタフィクション的な要素が含まれるのは当然なのだ。プロジェクト・グーテンバークにはさまざまな翻訳が集録されていてどれを読むかはその人の自由だが、最近電子化されたのは1775年スモレットによって訳出されたものである。古いので綴りが今とはちょっと違うが、日本語訳なら片山伸の訳を読むようで、かえって雰囲気が出ている。

Oblomov by Ivan Goncharov

イワン・ゴンチャロフの「オブローモフ」はいわばロシアの「引きこもり」を描いた小説だが、ドストエフスキーの「カラマーゾフ」やトルストイの「戦争と平和」に勝るとも劣らない傑作である。この本は十年くらい前からプロジェクト・グーテンバークに集録されていたのだが、今回誤植などを訂正して新版として発表された。1915年に出たホガース訳である。新しい英語翻訳が読みたいならスティーブン・パールの見事な訳業がある。

Futility by William Gerhardie

ウィリアム・ジェハーディーを知っている人はいるだろうか。生前はイーヴリン・ウォーやグレアム・グリーンといった文壇の大御所たちがこぞって彼を称賛していたのだが1940年代になると作品を書かなくなり忘れられていった。本書「むなしさ」は革命前後のロシアを舞台にした自伝的小説。「オブローモフ」と読み比べるのも一興だろう。またブリジッド・ブロフィがナボコフの「栄光」と本書を比較したエッセイを書いている。ナボコフも本書を読んでいたと思う。ただし登場人物が膨大なのでメモを取りながら読まないと混乱する。

Point Coutner Point by Aldous Huxley

「対位法」は1928年に発表されたハクスレーの代表作。この本も三年くらい前からアップロードされているのだが、やはり今回なんらかの訂正をほどこしニュー・バージョンとして発表された。ハクスレーの知的な作品は面白く、学生時代に読みあさった。小説はどれも考えさせる内容を持っていたし、評論でも Grey Eminence は奇怪な人間精神のありようを追求してわたしを圧倒した。「対位法」は1920年代のイギリス社会をさまざまな人々の生き様を通して批判的に描き出したものだ。調べてみると永松定と朱牟田夏雄の訳があるらしい。朱牟田夏雄は「トリストラム・シャンディ」の名訳で知られるが、現代小説の訳もうまいのだろうか。読んでみたい。

11. Die Monate

Die Monate heißen Januar, Februar, März, April, Mai, Juni, Juli, August, September, Oktober, November und Dezember. Der erste Monat heißt Januar, der dritte heißt März, und der letzte heißt Dezember. Für die Kinder ist der letzte Monat der beste, denn am fünfundzwanzigsten Dezember ist Weihnachten.

Ein Monat hat dreißig oder einunddreißig Tage. Sieben Monate haben einunddreißig Tage, vier Monate haben dreißig Tage, und der Monat Februar hat achtundzwanzig oder neunundzwanzig Tage.

Für die Studenten in Deutschland ist die erste Woche des Monats die beste Woche, und die letzte Woche ist die schlechteste Woche. In der ersten Woche hat der Student Geld, in der letzten Woche hat er Hunger.

Man sagt:
Wenn im Januar der Winter nicht kommen will,
kommt er im März und im April.
Oder auch:
Was der März nicht will, nimmt der April.

not to say は「……とまでは言わないが」とか、場合に依っては「ほとんど……といってもよい」といった意味になる。

• Mathematical processes are, in effect, no more than ordinary logic in concentrated form, the shorthand of reasoning, so to speak. 「数学的手続きは事実上、通常の論理を圧縮化したもの、いわば論証の速記法であるにすぎない」

so to speak は「いわば」「言ってみれば」という意味。

• To begin with, I do not like its color. 「まず第一に、その色が好きではない」
• To crown all, his mother died the same day. 「なおそのうえ、その日母親が死んだ」
• But to return to my subject. 「しかし本題に立ち戻りましょう」

いわゆる独立不定詞で慣用的に用いられる句が多い。to tell the truth は truth to tell あるいは sooth to say となることがある。
