192. to 不定詞を使った慣用句
- To speak the truth, I did not know at all. 「実を言えばすこしも知らなかった」
- To do his best, he could not learn at all. 「いかに努力しても、すこしも覚えなかった」
- To begin with, I do not like its color. 「まず第一に、その色が好きではない」
- To crown all, his mother died the same day. 「なおそのうえ、その日母親が死んだ」
- But to return to my subject. 「しかし本題に立ち戻りましょう」
いわゆる独立不定詞で慣用的に用いられる句が多い。to tell the truth は truth to tell あるいは sooth to say となることがある。
